Rutgers-Camden Childhood Studies PhD and MA applications for graduate study now being accepted; funding available

The Department of Childhood Studies at Rutgers University in Camden, New Jersey USA (http://childhood.camden.rutgers.edu/), opened its doors in September 2007 as the first Ph.D. granting program in Childhood Studies in North America. In addition to the Ph.D., the multidisciplinary program offers BA and MA degrees. Graduate students in the program (http://childhood.camden.rutgers.edu/graduate-program/graduate-students/), come from a variety of backgrounds and bring with them an impressive array of educational and life experience. The Masters of Art program continues to grow and produce new and innovative leaders in their field.

Department faculty (http://childhood.camden.rutgers.edu/faculty/) represent diverse areas of scholarship—including psychology, literature, sociology history, geography, education, media studies, critical race and post-colonial studies and methods—who, through research, public engagement and teaching, contribute to the expansion of the dynamic field of childhood studies.

Conference: young people affected by sexual violence as change-makers in prevention efforts

Cumberland Lodge – ‘Young people affected by sexual violence as change-makers in prevention efforts’ a one day international colloquium on participatory practice and the ethical challenges it presents

This unique, inter-disciplinary conference will bring together leading children’s rights advocates, researchers and practitioners to explore the benefits, opportunities and risks of participatory working with young people affected by sexual violence.

Confirmed speakers include: International Child Rights Advocate Gerison Lansdown; leading academics, Professor Jenny Pearce OBE and Dr Kristine Hickle; and expert practitioners from PhotoVoice (UK), ECPAT International (Thailand) and Stichting Alexander (Netherlands).

This inter-institutional, inter-disciplinary event will provide an interactive space for discussions on creative and therapeutic tools for effective practice; ethical dilemmas and legal implications of participatory work; and the opportunities and challenges that social media presents for involving more young people in prevention efforts.

Postdoctoral Position for Connected Learning at UC Irvine

One postdoctoral position is available in the Digital Media & Learning Research Hub (http://dmlhub.net/), at the UC Humanities Research Institute, based on the University of California, Irvine campus. The postdoctoral scholar will collaborate in a MacArthur Foundation-funded research network on Connected Learning, investigating how digital and networked media can support interest-driven and socially connected forms of learning. The postdoctoral scholar will be responsible for conducting ethnographic and design research on interest-driven learning with digital media, with a focus on parental involvement. The project will involve building on an existing body of research to develop and study how families can more productively engage with digital media. Research, design, and writing will be conducted as part of a collaborative team effort with principle investigators and others involved in the research network.

Requirements – Candidates should have a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline and research experience with contemporary developments concerning youth, digital media and learning. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in ethnographic and online research with families and youth and expertise in learning theory, Internet research, and design research. Fluency in Spanish is desirable. Evidence of collaborative and mixed methods research will also be valued. Travel may be required in this position to perform research and meet with collaborators.

Position is dependent on extramural funding. Initial appointment is for one year and renewal is based on performance and is contingent on receipt of project funding. Review of applications will begin May 11, 2015, and will continue through application deadline of July 31, 2015.

The appointment may begin as early as January 1, 2016 and would continue until December 31, 2016, renewable for an additional year, pending review and available funding. Annual salary ranges from $52,000 to $56,243 depending on experience.

MA in Children, Youth and International Development

This innovative interdisciplinary programme, based at Brunel University London, is one of the first worldwide to cater specifically for those working, or interested in working, in the field of children, youth and international development. Taught by highly motivated, internationally recognised, research-active staff, it has been running since 2009, and has attracted students from diverse disciplinary and occupational backgrounds and almost 50 different countries.

The course is designed to equip students with the conceptual understanding and breadth of knowledge required to critically evaluate policy and practice in the area of children, youth and international development. It also develops the skills necessary to design and undertake research relating to children, youth and development. Former students have progressed to careers with government, international organisations and NGOs as well as doctoral study.

The full time course requires attendance two days a week across two terms (September to April), followed by 6 months spent preparing for, researching and writing a dissertation. During term 2, options include a work placement or participation in an academic exchange with the Norwegian Centre for Child Research in Trondheim.

The course commences in late September. We do not operate strict application deadlines, but it is advisable for international applicants to apply early as it can take several months to secure a UK study visa. Discounts are also available for applicants with first class degrees from UK universities and to graduates of Brunel University.
