CfP: Culture, Commitment and Care across the Life Course, Oxford UK 08-09 June 2017

Oxford Brookes University will host the 10th Biennial AAGE Conference on the theme Culture, Commitment and Care across the Life Course. This two-day conference is organized in partnership between the Association of Anthropology, Gerontology, and the Life Course and members of ACYIG, and will focus on bridging themes between youth and old age, intergenerational relationships, and life course development from anthropological perspectives. It is of particular interest to students, scholars, and professionals interested in new perspectives on ageing and care in social gerontology, anthropology, sociology, social work, medical humanities, childhood studies, and public health.

Themes for papers or posters may include, but are not limited to:

  • Changing patterns of the normative life course
  • Representations of childhood and old age
  • Vulnerability and dependence across the life course

  • Political activity and rights among youth and older adults

  • Wisdom and intergenerational narrative building

  • The value of ethnography in human development

Keynote speakers

We are excited to have Professor Mary Catherine Bates on as our keynote speaker from the United States. Prof. Bateson is the author of several books, including With a Daughter’s EyeComposing a Life, and Composing a Further Life: The Age of Active Wisdom. She has been a longtime supporter of AAGE and has led an energetic push within anthropology to re-conceptualize life course development in the contemporary world.

Our second keynote will be delivered by Professor Pia Christensen Leeds University. Prof. Christensen is an anthropologist who has has published widely on issues surrounding childhood and education in the UK and Denmark. She was previously Professor and Director of Research in the Institute of Education at the University of Warwick (2005-2012), Professor in the Research Unit for General Practice at the University of Copenhagen, and Senior Researcher at the National Institute of Public Health in Denmark.
