THE UNIVERSITY:  California State University, East Bay is known for award-winning programs, expert instruction, a diverse student body, and a choice of more than 100 career-focused fields of study. THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Human Development & Women’s Studies promotes interdisciplinary study of human development over the life course. Our faculty includes scholars from anthropology, sociology, psychology, biology and other disciplines. We offer courses that introduce a wide range of theories, perspectives, and methods on human development. The Department provides its courses through on-campus instruction and through several forms of at-distance instruction, including a growing number of fully online courses.  We serve approximately 500 Human Development majors, several hundred Liberal Studies majors preparing for teacher credential programs, and students from other majors who are completing their general education requirements. DUTIES OF THE POSITION: The successful candidate will teach courses in child development/childhood studies, child cognitive development, foundational courses in human development, and other courses that may be required by the Department. In collaboration with other faculty members, s/he will work to strengthen the Department’s Childhood Development and Early Childhood Development curriculum by developing and teaching new courses. All Human Development & Women’s Studies faculty members are expected to make appropriate use of instructional technology, including online instruction.

Please note that teaching assignments at California State University, East Bay include courses at the Hayward, Concord and Online campuses.  In addition to teaching, all faculty have advising responsibilities, assist the department with administrative and/or committee work, and are expected to assume campus-wide committee responsibilities.

RANK AND SALARY: Assistant Professor.  Salary is dependent upon educational preparation and experience.  Subject to budgetary authorization.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Earned Ph.D. or M.D. at the time of appointment is required.  Record of scholarly activity in child development/childhood studies required. Demonstrated evidence of scholarly productivity required.  Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching required; candidates with successful teaching experience at the university level are preferred. The department wishes to recruit a Research Associate to support the work of Dr Tara Woodyer. This ESRC funded post is available from January 1st 2014 for a period of 24 months and will be based at the University of Portsmouth. The successful applicant will assist in the completion of fieldwork, data analysis and dissemination activities associated with an ESRC-funded research project entitled ‘Ludic Geopolitics: Children’s Play, War Toys and Re-enchantment with the British Military’. Led by the University of Portsmouth, this project is in collaboration with the University of Exeter, Royal Holloway University of London, and the V & A Museum of Childhood.

The post holder will contribute to trade-based research concerning the British ‘action figure’ toy (broadly 1960s to the present day), undertake qualitative research with toy industry representatives and using trade press, conduct participant observation at toy industry events, and support ethnographic research conducted with children. Working with the rest of the project team (Dr Sean Carter, Exeter, Prof Klaus Dodds, Royal Holloway, and an Associate Research Fellow based in Exeter), the post-holder will contribute to project meetings, data analysis, event organisation, presentations and drafting of journal articles and user reports.

Applicants will possess a relevant postgraduate qualification and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in one or more of the following disciplines: Human Geography (especially Political Geography), Politics, Childhood Studies, or Sociology. They will also possess sufficient knowledge of qualitative research methods and techniques. Knowledge of current academic research relating to one or more of the themes of the project (geopolitical cultures, militarisation, and war play) would be desirable, as would experience of generating qualitative data via archival work, visual and textual analysis, participant observation and/or interviews.

Seeking anthropologists for innovation project about the future of parenting

GfK is seeking anthropologists as expert contributors to an innovation project focusing on parenting 8 to 15 years from now.
We will do extended expert interviews via phone / Skype, and will then invite some people in to workshop sessions.
We need to understand how cultural and social factors will influence the future of parenting across the globe, and where the significant differences will be.
We’re interested in talking to anthropologists who:
  • Are able to provide a global comparative overview of cultural and social factors influencing future changes in parenting
  • And / or, who have specific local cultural and social expertise in China, Russia, Vietnam, the US, or LATAM – which can provide context for future changes in parenting
Of course, we’ll be offering appropriate compensation.

Position:
The Department of Child and Family Studies (CFS) at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, invites applications for an early childhood education (birth-8), tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. The position will begin in August, 2014. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in early childhood curriculum, policy, and/or the needs of diverse learners. Direct experience in early childhood classrooms is highly desirable. The department supports an ecological and interdisciplinary perspective on early education and seeks a candidate whose on-going research and teaching will strengthen the ECE program and the CFS department. Successful candidates will be expected to demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of multiple methods of scholarship in the area of early childhood education and/or teacher education. Successful candidates will be expected to pursue an active research agenda, including seeking funding from competitive federal and private agencies, in addition to participating in the Department’s undergraduate and graduate advising and teaching programs and in particular, the Early Childhood Teacher Licensure tracks. Experience working in an interdisciplinary environment is desirable. Candidates must have an earned doctorate degree in Early Childhood Education, Early Childhood Special Education, Child Development, or a closely related field. Candidates must be able to demonstrate their ability to perform at the rank being considered. Tenure Track Position in Primary Education/Child Development at U. Mass. Amherst

The Department of Teacher Education and Curriculum Studies (TECS) in the College of Education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is seeking candidates to join a dedicated and accomplished community of faculty, students, and staff as an Assistant Professor, in Primary Education (Grades K – 2nd)/Child Development. This is a full-time tenure track position beginning in September 2014.

The College is NCATE-approved and offers a comprehensive program leading to undergraduate, Master’s and doctoral degrees. We share a fundamental commitment to social justice and the pursuit of educational excellence. Located in the beautiful Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts, the University of Massachusetts Amherst is the flagship campus of the Commonwealth’s university system and is a leading center of public higher education in the Northeast.

Faculty in Children, Families and Schools lead an undergraduate program in early childhood education, an elementary education licensure program as well as a Master’s and doctoral program. We are seeking a colleague to collaborate with and generate externally funded projects and contribute to the Department and College on service and leadership roles whose research and scholarly background evidence a foundation in child development with a particular interest in factors that influence the learning and development of primary grade level students (Grades K – 2nd).

Qualifications: doctorate in Education or a related Social Science or interdisciplinary area (e.g., Child Development, Early Childhood Education, Childhood Studies, Elementary Education, Human Development, Educational Psychology, or Psychology); expertise in child development as applied to primary learning, curriculum development and/or academic content areas relevant to primary grade learners, pre-service teacher preparation, family-school connections and/or applications of developmental theory to education policy and practice; established publication record or indication of considerable promise; experience teaching or strong potential to teach at the graduate and undergraduate level; and the ability to work effectively with learners or diverse cultures and backgrounds. Interest in urban education and a commitment to educator preparation preferred.

Responsibilities: Teach, advise students and fully participate in the Department’s graduate and undergraduate programs in child development; participate in preparing preservice and inservice early childhood and elementary teachers, including working closely with colleagues to develop clinical/professional development school sites; develop and maintain an active research agenda, including seeking funding from competitive federal and private agencies; and participate actively in shared governance of the Department and College.

Associate Professor (tenured) of Childhood Studies to commence on

Building on the strengths of its established, internationally recognized
program, the Department seeks outstanding scholars whose research interests
and projects address the lives or contexts of children and childhood from
an interdisciplinary perspective.  All areas in the social sciences and
humanities are welcome, including interdisciplinary fields such as
performance studies, gender studies and disability studies. The
disciplinary affiliation of an applicant is of less importance than the
quality of his/her research and the demonstrated appreciation for
multidisciplinary approaches to the study of children and childhood.  We
