PhD studentships in Literature and Creative Writing

Newcastle University’s School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics is delighted to announce funding for a number of PhD studentships in Literature and Creative Writing, made available as part of the University’s Research Excellence Academy.

Newcastle University’s Children’s Literature Unit would welcome and support applications for this funding that link to the Unit’s research interests. The Children’s Literature Unit has a wide range of expertise, covering Renaissance childhoods; children’s literature and culture from the 18th century to the present day; book history and publishing; childhood and performance; and radical children’s literature. The supporting information attached provides profiles of potential supervisors and examples of current and past supervision.

We would particularly welcome proposals for projects drawing on Newcastle University’s special collections and the archival holdings of Seven Stories: The National Centre for Children’s Books. Major figures represented within the Seven Stories collection include Beverly Naidoo, Geoffrey Trease, Diana Wynne Jones, David Wood, Judith Kerr, and David Fickling (see information attached, or visit http://www.sevenstories.org.uk/collection/authors-and-illustrators for a full list).

The successful applicants will start on their studies on a full-time basis in autumn 2016. Each studentship covers tuition fees and living expenses for three years. Additional financial support will also be available to students from outside the EU. The deadline for applications is 16 May 2016. This funding opportunity complements the University’s recent announcement of £1million funding for Research Excellence Academy PhD studentships in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences(deadline for applications: 30 April 2016), which would particularly suit cross-disciplinary children’s literature doctoral projects.

If you are considering applying for either of the Research Excellence Academy funding opportunities, please contact Dr Lucy Pearson, lucy.pearson@ncl.ac.uk / +44 (0) 191 208 3894 in the first instance.
